Mrs. Savage has been left $10 million by her late husband, and wants to make the best use of it by living out her delayed dreams and financing the dreams of others. But, her grown stepchildren have other plans. They have her commited to a sanatorium, hoping to “bring her to her senses” - and get the money for themselves! At the sanitorium, Mrs. Savage meets various social misfits, all of whom believe that they cannot survive in the cruel outside world. She sees an opportunity to help them, and ultimately plans to spend the rest of her life as one of them. She, too, hesitates to go out into a hard world where people seem ready to do anything for money. But, as the step-children engage in vain efforts to browbeat Mrs. Savage into surrendering her inheritence, her new friends conspire to get rid of her stepchildren! The dominant mood is high comedy, and the audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems at times motivated only by greed and dishonesty.
